Friday Focus – It’s Okay To Be Wrong

I WAS WRONG. The three toughest words for so many of us to speak. This is especially true when you’re in a leadership position and you have to speak those words to those who follow you. For some reason we think it shows weakness, or lack of leadership, if we admit being wrong. We have this false perception that a leader should never admit failure.

The truth is being able to admit when you’re wrong is a powerful leadership trait. First, it shows that you understand it’s not all about you. You having to be right is not the goal. Second, it shows you value the input of others. You understand your voice isn’t the only one in the room. Third, it shows you want to do what is right for those who follow you. It’s putting the needs of the group over your own.

Being able to admit when you’re wrong builds up trust with those you lead. It shows them your focus is not on lifting yourself up but lifting the team up. It also allows you to grow as a leader taking the focus off yourself and putting it on the team. This is true in all areas of your life where you’re a leader.
