You’ve seen me write on the concept of servant leadership many times before. I do this because of how important it is for us to understand what true leadership is. Being in a position of leadership is about serving others not the other way around. We can all point out situations where the leader feels they should be served and the focus is all on them. That is not what true leadership is.

Leadership for me starts with caring about the people I’m leading. When I care for them then I want to make sure they have what they need to succeed. My focus is on helping them to utilize their gifts and abilities so they can fulfill their purpose in life. My position of leadership is not for my benefit but for their growth.

Remember that leadership is influence and we all have people that we influence, so we’re all leaders in some aspect. Think about the different positions of leadership you have within your life (family, job, church, etc.). Now ask yourself, am I using my position of influence to serve others or am I using it to serve me?

If your focus hasn’t been on serving others today is a great day to start changing your focus. Become a true leader!
