This people principle from John Maxwell is probably the toughest to apply. It means we have to be honest with ourselves and acknowledge our faults and shortcomings. This type of self-reflection can be painful for us because it can reveal things we have hidden on purpose.
The most important relationship you will ever have is with yourself. You have to like and respect who you are when you look in that mirror to build healthy relationships with others. If you’re not comfortable with yourself then you can’t be comfortable with others.
I’ve been down this road of self-reflection and it was painful and caused me to acknowledge some things about myself that I know I needed to change. It was tough but without it I wouldn’t be who I am today, and I wouldn’t have the relationships I have today.
The truth is we have to stop blaming others and do the hard work of resolving the issues that are causing us problems. If we want to have better relationships we have to stop, look in the mirror and start working on the person we see looking back at us.
