What Do You Do?

Integrity is defined as “the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles.” The definition attributed to C.S. Lewis in the picture puts it plainly for us all. So the question we must all ask ourselves is what do you do when no one is looking? Do you have a moral compass that points you in the right direction when the only person around is you?

When I look back on my life I unfortunately can find many instances when that moral compass did not point in the right direction. I know if each of us is honest with ourselves that revelation will be true in each of our lives.

The dilemma most of us face is trying to justify those times we lack integrity. We try to chalk it up to being young, the incident not being that important, or any list of excuses we want to come up with. But the truth is those “small” moments when we lack integrity slowly weaken the moral compass we have. Without you realizing it, the compass has moved far away from where it should be and now you lack integrity in the “big” things as well. Your moral compass is now pointing in the opposite direction and you aren’t even sure how it happened.

Having integrity in every situation is difficult, but it’s something we each must strive for. We must understand that those “small” moments we lack integrity are eroding away the foundation of who we are. They take you further away from who God calls you to be. They keep you from living your life with true purpose.

I challenge you to take a few moments to look back at your life. Be honest with yourself and identify those times you’ve lacked integrity and look at the results. If you’re honest, you will see how those moments slowly eroded your foundation.

The awesome thing is you can fix it. Each of us can make it a priority in our lives to live each day and each moment with integrity. Yes, it may be tough and yes there will be times you fail but the key is acknowledging those moments and making corrections. Over time it becomes easier and your foundation becomes solid again. At that point, having integrity is second nature. It is a part of you! A person of integrity is who you are!
