22 February 2017 – How Do I Rest?

Yesterday I spoke about how rested and rejuvenated I felt after I spent a day unplugged from work, social media, etc.
I encouraged each of you to find a day during your week that would be your day of true resting, where you would unplug and focus on just enjoying that day.
I believe the hardest part for each of us is not picking a day, but on that day staying true to truly resting and not getting sucked back in to working, social media, etc.
I believe there are 3 things that you must understand in order to truly take advantage of that day of rest.

1. The world will continue to rotate without you having to move it.
What I mean is that things will continue to operate in your business, on social media, at your job, etc. without you there physically or mentally for one day.
We all love to believe that we are that important, that things will not function properly without us, but in all honesty that is simply not the case.
Your business will not fall apart with one day of you not being there, your co-workers will be able to carry on without you sitting at your desk for one day, and Facebook, Twitter and Instagram will continue without your posts for one day.
You have to allow yourself to believe that things will go on without you.

2. You need something to do on your day of rest.
Now many may be saying right now, “Didn’t you just tell me to rest, now you’re telling me to do something, I’m confused.”
The something I want you to do has nothing to do with work, or social media, or any of those things you stay plugged into during the rest of your week.
I want you to enjoy relaxing things like playing with the kids, going for walks, working out, a spa day, riding bikes, photography, sitting on the porch reading a book, etc.
It’s about spending your time doing things that you normally would not do because of your busy lifestyle.
It’s important to do this because if you just lay around on your day of rest, eventually your mind will go back to work, you will pick up the electronic device and go back on social media, and you will get sucked back into your routine.

3. Allowing yourself to truly rest will make you more productive when you return.
Whether you realize it or not, continuing to go at a pace where you don’t unplug and rest will burn you out.
Many of you are burnt out already but you don’t even know it.
You’ve been going at such a hectic, frantic pace for so long you don’t know what burnt out looks or feels like.
To you this is all normal and just the product of the life you’ve chosen.
You don’t see how unproductive you’ve become, how on edge you are, and how worn down you truly are.
Allowing yourself that day of rest will allow your mind to develop new thoughts, you will be more creative, you will be more productive and you will enjoy your life more.

I challenge each of you to give it a try, pick that day of the week that you designate as your day of rest.
Then truly allow yourself to unplug and rest and see what a difference it will make in your life.
