Friday Focus!

On this Friday, we finish up the Teamwork chapter of Doug Dickerson’s book, Leaders Without Borders.

The fabric of teamwork is a belief that achieving the organization’s goals and objectives is accomplished in a sensible, trustworthy fashion.
Bureaucracy is not the answer to successful teamwork; it is the obstacle.

The survival of effective teamwork depends on the understanding and execution of simplicity.
Here are some considerations to keep in mind.

Simplify your mission.
Simplicity of mission is not dumbing down the mission, nor does it equate to less work. It means working with a smarter understanding of the mission and the most efficient ways to achieve its stated purpose.
Simplifying the mission is about people in your organizational structure being able to connect the dots because leadership made sure they saw the big picture and knew where the ship was headed.
People should be empowered and trusted, and common sense should prevail.

Simplify communication.
One of the top frustrations you’ll find is that of communication – or lack thereof.
When key personnel are kept in the dark, when office politics stifles and hinders progress, the consequences can be costly.
Teamwork is enhanced when communication is clear.
Consequently, communication must be simple, concise, and clear.
Communication is the life blood of your organization.
If you don’t communicate well internally, don’t expect communication to go well externally.
Communication has a profound effect on teamwork.
Effective leaders understand that teamwork rises and falls on the power of simplicity in communication.

The power of teamwork is a process of applauding the gifts and talents that each team member brings to the process: by embracing the challenges that confront teamwork as opportunities, by creating a caring environment, and by simplifying communication.
