My 23 plus years in the military allowed me to live and work in many parts of the United States and the world. Those experiences helped give me the perspective that there’s a big world out there of which I’m only a very small part. There’s more to the world than me and my thoughts and what I believe.
I feel that perspective has helped me to see people for who they are and for where they are in life. I try to put myself in their shoes and see the world through their eyes, as best I can. I’m not always successful but in doing this I acknowledge that how they view the world matters and impacts how they react to what’s going on around them.
This allows me to have more compassion and understanding. This only works if I open myself up to the world around me. I can’t gain this perspective if I don’t get outside of myself and look at the world through the eyes of others. I have to open up my heart and mind to see and interact with those around me to see what they see.
Do you need to get outside of yourself today to gain a better understanding of those around you?
