It’s hard for us to lead others when we have no idea who we are. The people you influence look to you for an example. They want to know who you are as a person, not just the talents you display. When they truly look at you what will they see?
To know yourself means knowing your strengths and weaknesses. It’s understanding how these things impact you and as a result the interactions you have with others. It’s understanding why you react the way you do in certain situations.
I believe we never get to a point where the journey of self discovery is over. We have to continually stay in tune with who we are, how we are feeling and the changes taking place within us. There are many different ways we can do this. I personally use a daily journal to capture my thoughts and feelings. This allows me to go back and see how different changes have impacted me and more importantly my relationship with others.
Getting to know yourself doesn’t happen overnight, it takes time. If you haven’t started the journey it’s not too late and I encourage you to start. If you want to become a better leader (parent, supervisor, spouse, teammate, co-worker, friend, etc.) take the time to know yourself. Introspection is a journey worth taking.
