Today continues the journey through the book, Leaders Without Borders by Doug Dickerson. This excerpt focuses on priorities as a leader.
Priorities in leadership have to be guarded like your bottom line. When flooded with many good things competing for your time and attention, having a brick thrown your way may not be a bad thing.
Here are a few times when it might be useful.
We need a brick when we forget our family.
Leaders take on many responsibilities that compete for family time. There is no higher calling as a leader than to be a leader in the home first. Leadership begins at home. If you haven’t been successful in the living room, success in the boardroom won’t matter.
We need a brick when we forget our friends.
Colleagues who work hard and share your successes need to be remembered. In your workplace, remember the friends who have helped you achieve and attain the success you now enjoy. When colleagues are befriended it increases morale and keeps you grounded as a leader.
We need a brick when we forget that there are things in life bigger than us.
The end game is not what we get, but what we give. In other words, it’s not about us. Leaders should be striving not only to lift themselves to a higher level but also to raise the level of awareness of the organization toward serving others.
Properly balanced priorities are essential for staying focused and on course. When a leader is focused on the right priorities, it can make a difference between success and failure.
