One of the key traits of successful people that I picked up from reading John Maxwell is the focus they put on reflective thinking. Reflective thinking at its core is the awareness of your own knowledge, assumptions and past experiences. Reflective thinking allows you to use your past successes and mistakes to make better decisions in the present.
This can be a powerful tool in all areas of your life. Reflective thinking helps you to put things in perspective. When you face a situation you can look back on your past experiences to either gain confidence that you can overcome it or awareness that you need to move away from it. It helps you to not make the same mistake twice and to also follow a path that has been successful for you in the past.
Many of us don’t take advantage of reflective thinking because we’re moving through life too fast. We move from situation to situation so quickly we never take the time to reflect on what we truly should be doing. We also don’t take the time to learn from the experience we just went through.
Today find a way to add reflective thinking to your life. I’ve found this type of thinking only takes three things: time, a quiet place and something to write with. How much time is up to you as well as the place you choose and make sure you capture your thoughts. The time you spend doing this will positively impact your life!
