Take a moment to think about the relationships you have in your life, especially those where people are following you. Now ask yourself, am I adding to or subtracting from that person’s life. Are you adding value to their life?
This is a simple question to ask but it reveals a lot. I believe if I’m not intentionally trying to add value to the other person’s life then I’m subtracting from it. This is especially true if I’m in a position to lead that person.
Our goal everyday should be to add value to the lives of others. For leaders that requires having a servant heart, it requires servant leadership. That means it’s not about me, it’s about them. It’s about providing others the tools they need to grow. It’s about receiving joy from watching those who follow you succeed.
This is where I strive to be as a servant leader in all aspects of my life. I want to add value each day in the hope that I’m helping someone else to succeed. I know this is a lofty goal but at the end of my life I want the additions I make to people’s lives to far surpass the subtractions!
