“From his abundance we have all received one gracious blessing after another.”
John 1:16 NLT
I want you to stop what you’re doing and grab a piece of paper, if available, and write down 10 ways God has blessed you throughout your life. Each of you, regardless of what life may have thrown or is currently throwing at you, will be able to write down at least 10 things. Many of the lists will have things like being blessed with a spouse, a supportive family, a good job, etc. While others may have things like overcoming a bout with cancer, recovering from the death of a loved one, having a home when you were homeless, etc.
My reasoning for having you do this is twofold. First, I wanted each of you to take a moment to reflect on the many blessings you have received from God in your life. This is a good thing to do when you are going through a moment in your life when you don’t feel so blessed. A dose of reality is a good wake up call. Second, after looking at that list and realizing how blessed you are I want you to ask yourself if you are paying it forward? Are you going out and blessing someone else?
Each of us can bless others around us in some way each and every day. The problem is you get so caught up in what’s going on in your own life that you don’t take the time to see how you can bless someone else. This is especially true when you are going through a rough patch in your life. You feel so down and depressed that you don’t see how you could ever be viewed as a blessing to someone else. This is the beauty of paying it forward and blessing someone else, when you take the focus off of you and place it on helping someone else it makes your problems feel a whole lot smaller.
You know why that is? It’s because when you reach out to someone in need and open your heart to helping them, it opens your heart to receive help in return. That help comes in the form of feeling good about yourself, feeling like you have purpose, and feeling like you matter in this world. When you see the positive effect you can have on someone else’s life, even when you feel your life is broken, it will renew your spirit and give you new hope.
No matter what you may be going through in life, there is someone out there who needs the gifts God has given you so they can make it through their day. Today is the day to be that blessing to others that God calls you to be.
