“And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul? Is anything worth more than your soul?” Matthew 16:26 NLT
Values are defined as a person’s principles or standards of behavior; one’s judgment of what is important in life. Your values are developed over time and are based on many factors such as how you were raised, outside influences and your life experiences. Your values can change over time as you get older and what’s important to you changes.
I look at my own life and what I valued most when I was 20 is different than what I value most now at age 47. Because of my life experiences during those 27 years, faith and family are the top 2 things I value now. That wasn’t the same 27 years ago because of where I was in my life.
At stages in your life it’s important to do an assessment of your values so you truly understand the things that are most important to you. The decisions you make should be focused on these things you hold most important. But many times your decisions go against your values. This is when stress and strain are more prevalent in your life and you feel out of balance.
If you have family as a top value in your life but you are working a job that keeps you away from them 4-5 days out of the week, are you truly valuing family? If you have faith as a top value in your life, but you never spend any time growing closer to God and trying to understand His plan for your life, are you truly valuing faith?
If you are facing pain and turmoil in your life it may be that your decisions are not supporting those things you truly value in life. It’s time to make a change and bring your values to the forefront of your life. Once you start living your life according to those values, you will find yourself one step closer to the blessed life God has for you!
