Last night many of us watched the yearly worldwide event called The Super Bowl. My Cowboys weren’t playing in the game, and haven’t for awhile, but as a huge football fan I watched and appreciated the game. It is a game that captured the world’s attention with the game being broadcast in so many different countries and languages. The collective attention of millions of people were on the game and the two teams fighting for that championship. A contest of two teams and individual players giving their all to achieve that ultimate prize.
I believe the first true Super Bowl took place for us way before anyone knew what football was. This Super Bowl was not played on a football field and didn’t involve players running around in helmets, pads and a uniform. No, this Super Bowl was a battle between good and evil. It took place on a cross thousands of years ago.
Yes, for me that first Super Bowl, the big game for the ultimate championship, took place when Jesus willingly was nailed to the cross to forgive our sins and defeat death three days later. As it says in Hebrews 12:2 (NLT), “We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Because of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne.”
